Nest boxes for Westminster Park
Paul Makin
Saturday 13 March 2010
The Community Forum gave the Friends £225.00 towards the purchase of materials to build nest boxes for the Park. Today marked the first milestone for the this project, when pupils from the Ecology Group at the Catholic High School helped Country Ranger Andy James install 12 nest boxes in the Park.
They were helped by Councillors Raiza Daniels, Arthur Harada and Richard Short (who provided some the money) together with Roger Ives (the ecology master), and Norman Trott, Mike Lloyd and Paul Makin from the Friends.
Norman had obtained the wood from Ringwood Fencing, Mike had cut it into the correct lengths and the School had made the boxes during ecology lessons. They made 20 boxes and the balance will be installed by Andy over the next few weeks.
Now it is up to the birds (and the bees?)
The Park has the capacity for 200 boxes and the Friends will work over the next year to make and install that number. During the year we will be seeking volunteers to assemble the boxes from the kits prepared by Norman and Mike. All you need is a hammer and a good eye. Any volunteers our there?
Regards.
Paul.
